LA1: UNDERSTANDING THE PURPOSE OF DIGETIC AND NON-DIGETIC SOUND
DIEGETIC:
This is what happens in the story so all of the people on set can actually hear this noise happening, Its a noise that is played on screen such as car horns, traffic, gun shots or people dancing to music.
NON-DIEGETIC
EXAMPLE 1:
The start of this (the underwater scene) is an example of non-diegetic sound as the music didn't actually play underwater they added it during editing so nobody could actually hear this before the music was overlaid on top. This is used as non-diegetic sound so that it creates a suspense/dramatic effect to the viewer by the way the tempo rises and the notes sound very dark.
EXAMPLE 2:
The middle part of this scene (campfire scene) is an example of diegetic sound as this is what they were actually doing while acting out the scene, this may have been modified in editing slightly just to remove any background noise or to louden the actual noises however, nothing will be overlaid. This is good to use so the movie has a real feeling to it making the viewer feel more involved.
