LA1 : USE RESEARCH METHODS TO GATHER MATERIALS : PROPOSALS
A Proposal
A proposal is a key piece of information needed to go forward with a film you would like to create. A proposal is something that you show to a producer, director or agent. A film proposal comes in five parts, i am going to go through all of them to show you how to make a film proposal.
3. FILM SYNOPSIS
The way which you introduce the synopsis is the most crucial part of your film proposal. This tells whoever you are presenting to how compelling and drawing in the project is. This reveals how interested and involved with the project the filmmaker is. If your synopsis is strategically done and everything is perfectly dynamic in the flow, this will make it remain in the readers mind and keep them thinking about it. Sum up the base of your project.

2. THE LOGLINE
This is a brief 30 second overview of what your script will entail, in doing this you must describe the plot in a way that will make the producers, directors and agents interested and drawn into your film. This is beneficial as this is what the directors will get to know about the film first and you don't want them to be bored of it before it has even started, a way of ensuring that you keep the producers, directors and agents interested is by starting this with a captivating way of stating the main concept of the film ( such as a scene with a lot of captivating things going on )

3. SCREENPLAY STRUCTURE
With this being a visual industry it is crucial that the person reading your film proposal needs to be able to visualize the story in their heads and get a very good idea of what you are trying to put forward. In here it is best to give a summary of the key aspects in the film, again what i mean by this is a scene where a lot of captivating things are happening. Many films are organized into a 3-act structure... This 3 act structure is shown by
1. The Set Up: Usually around half an hour long this tells us the situation, setting, theme and introduces us to main characters and the idea of conflict is introduced.
2. The Conflict: Often an hour or so long, this is where the conflict begins to open up and and expands and broadens out until the point where it reaches a crisis, this is when the height of the film is (also known as the climax)
3. The Resolution: The conflict rises to one more crisis this is made for anther entertainment boost incase people are starting to lose interest in the film, then the crisis is resolved, this is mainly for a light ending so they eave the cinema happy with what they have just seen.
4. CHARACTERS
Describe the relevant characters in detail, this makes sure the people who you are proposing the idea to have the clearest image in their head of these characters, you can go into detail of these characters by making notes of things such as their hair colour, eye colour, height, weight, build, face features, body features, hair length, personality and traits. If these characters are present and important in your idea this will dramatically make the people you are proposing to build a relationship with the characters.
5. FILM TREATMENT
This part of the film proposal should read similarly to a short story and wrote in present tense unlike a film synopsis which is written in the third person. This should include the entire plot of the story, start, middle and end. This will be much more in depth than a synopsis and can give who you are presenting your idea to a better more in depth feel of the movie. Laying the story out from start to end will lay out the story a lot more clearly and help whoever is listening vision it a lot easier. The treatment is a very precise process which is technically a first draft of a script however, this could change in time with the actual movie if it gets approved
6. TARGET AUDIENCE
Here it is important that you know the answers to the following questions:
- Who is your ideal audience?
- How do you know this?
- How can you justify that your project fits the interests of this demographic?
- What is your USP to this project that helps you stand out?
You must take into consideration what your demographic want to see and what they will find eye-catching, you can do this via surveys asking them things such as "Which colours are most eye-catching to you as a viewer?" Having a better idea of your target audience can allow you to explain the film treatment better.
